The Path to “Dominatrix Boss”

Dominatrix Boss began three years ago. The impetus for starting the book was three things.

I wanted to write something that would be fun.

This is the first book I’ve written. I’ve been a writer since I was seven years old, and I’ve been published as a poet, a comic writer, an article writer and I’m a professional writer, but this is my first full book.

I knew that writing Dominatrix Boss would be a lot of fun. Because it was fun, it kept me on track over time.

It’s not a serious work of fiction. It’s not The Great American Novel. It’s an erotic story, with an emphasis on erotic, and that meant it was always fun to sit down and write the book.

I wanted to write something that I knew I could finish.

Closely-related to writing a fun book, I wanted to write a book that was more about emotions, and scenes, than about in-depth character development and plot.

Speaking as a first-time writer, I can tell you that there’s a lot of pressure when you’ve never completed a manuscript. The mountain that stands in front of you to get a work COMPLETED is high and steep.

Since Dominatrix Boss is basically a two-person play (there are a few other characters, but it’s mostly about Ava and Tim) then it makes the structure of the book more simple. I knew finishing this book was just a matter of sitting down and getting the work done.

I wanted to write femdom fiction that was sexy and authentic.

I’ve been interested in female domination since I was very little. Strong women were always attractive to me. So, I’ve read a lot of stories over the years that had female domination (or BDSM) and in most cases, I was disappointed.

Much of what I’ve read either…

  • wasn’t written well,
  • wasn’t written by someone who knows anything about BDSM,
  • or didn’t present something that was positive and sexy.

It’s no secret that a lot of BDSM is written by people who have no background in the community. E.L. James wrote Fifty Shades of Grey, the biggest BDSM book of all time, and she readily admits that she has no knowledge of BDSM other than doing some research. Anyone in the community who read Fifty Shades knew instinctually that the scenes, characters, and emotions were completely off.

I wish I could say that neophytes writing BDSM stopped with Fifty Shades, but that’s only the most obvious example.

As someone who has been in the BDSM community for 20 years, and has been both dominant and submissive, I wanted to bring something more authentic to the bookshelf.

Also, what I’ve noticed is that even if an author knew what they were talking about, female domination stories were often depressing and weren’t very hot. There was a physical and emotional distance between the characters which often left me cold.

I wanted to present a real BDSM relationship, with a dominant woman. There’s not a lot of those out there. I can point to Exit to Eden, which is excellent by the way, but the dropoff after Exit to Eden is a whopper! (Have any suggestions for great femdom fiction books? Please tell me in the comments below! I’ll be glad to read them myself.)

Dominatrix Boss

I worked hard to create a tale that had authentic training methods, real emotion and was positive toward both of the main characters. And hopefully, it’s hot, for both men and women.

What would be amazing is if some people who had very little knowledge about a female-led relationship became intrigued and sought out more information after reading Dominatrix Boss.

It’s an honest and sexy take on a femdom relationship that includes many of the elements that BDSM couples know about and experience every day, but all too often are ignored in popular media.
